　　Dr Sacco: For stroke， like other cardiovascular diseases， the one main drug we use is aspirin for preventing a recurrent stroke because most studies have shown that aspirin is effective in terms of reducing the risk of recurrent stroke.  The other anti platelet agents that are being used include extended release Dipyridamole and aspirin and Clopidogrel.  These agents have been shown to be more effective than aspirin in terms of reducing the risk of a recurring stroke.  Other agents for patients who have cardioembolic stroke – that is strokes from abnormal heart rhythm like atrial fibrillation -- warfarin is usually the best therapy.  Most recently approved in the United States is a direct thrombin inhibitor called Dabigatran that will soon be available for patients with atrial fibrillation.
